R. L. Batte, Sr., Texas rancher, was a creative and independent pioneer of Central Texas. One of the sturdy breed of early Texans that carved a place for cattle and farming from the untamed Texas wilderness, he was a man of vision and determined spirit. He amassed an empire of about 15,000 acres of premium river bottom land, gins, a cotton seed oil mill, and other businesses near Cameron.
Grandson of R. L. Batte, Sr., John Summers Batte was a rancher and storyteller. He looked what you would expect of the Texas rancher, square jawed and tall. Nobody could spin a better yarn or tell more interesting cowboy stories than Uncle John.
Ima Graham Batte was Uncle Johns mate for life. Aunt Ima was a most gentle and gracious lady. An old fashioned Texas school marm, she was head teacher in a country two room school house before she married John Summers Batte. Her school students were special to her and she to them.
The only offspring of Uncle John and Aunt Ima, Abbie Gayle was a born cowgirl - riding horseback solo by 3 years of age. She was queen of the Kitty Wright Ranch, the name of Uncle Johns ranch in Milam County.
